What does your work entail?
I ensure the immigration process runs smoothly so international employees can quickly settle and work in the Netherlands.
Why did you choose this work?
I previously worked at Wageningen University & Research, where I enjoyed interacting with students and staff. I love being customer-oriented and now, I get to build longer-term connections, which is even more fulfilling.
“I was showered with gifts
by a man from India. There was no need, of course, but his gratitude struck me!”
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy being the first point of contact during the immigration process. You are a beacon in what can be an exciting period for these people. Even after their arrival, I like to help them find their way. And how wonderful it is to hear their stories about their home countries. The whole world passes by my desk. I find it an inspiring work environment.
Which case study has stuck with you the most?
I was showered with gifts by a man from India. Upon arrival, he had a bunch of roses, a beautiful scarf and a wallet with my name printed on it. He apparently felt he was being well served and so wanted to show his gratitude. Sure the gifts were unnecessary, but his gratitude struck me. You can make a difference for people.
Do you have any tips?
Listen carefully to people. They will tell you what they find challenging about their new environment. Helping them understand unwritten rules makes them feel welcome and at home, increasing their chances of success.
